Certain threats are difficult to detect with traditional antivirus programs. Sometimes, you need a bit more than conventional means to deal with malware or rootkits. An effective measure against these threats is provided by SanityCheck. It is very lightweight and easy to use, but it is capable of finding spoofed processes, items that mimic common system processes, misbehaving kernel modules and much more, by using special deep inventory techniques. Any irregularities it finds will be included in a detailed report immediately.

Downloading the utility will take only a few moments, due to the small size of its setup package. The installation process is fast and it does not involve any advanced options. You can use SanityCheck on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, as well as various Server editions. The program also comes in two editions: Pro and Home, which is free.

The program's interface consists mainly of text. You just need to hit the Analyze button, in the upper left corner of the window, wait a few seconds and the text will be updated with a conclusion. When the analysis is done, the program can tell you if it found any irregularities and provide you with various suggestions, recommendations, as well as basic information about your system.

If you want more functionality, you may switch to expert mode, to reveal additional options. You will find all your installed drivers, devices, processes, threads, object types and routines in different lists. Additionally, the software lets you bring up details about specific items, from any list and copy them to the clipboard.

For better detection, SanityCheck can enable certain registry settings. This requires clicking an option, in expert mode, and rebooting the computer. Deactivating this feature is done the same way, with a different option.

Pros

SanityCheck takes up very little disk space and it can detect rootkits and malware, which some antivirus programs are not capable of finding. The application is straightforward and easy to use and it works on various Windows platforms.

Cons

You can save reports by copying the text, but you can not find options for exporting in different formats. While using its basic controls, SanityCheck will perform advanced procedures to find any threat that hides within our system.
